Our Program

In a supportive and guided setting, students DISCOVER math concepts using hands-on Montessori materials. Their physical exploration and practice moves them from a concrete experience to a deep abstract understanding. They gain a foundation they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

MMC’s Approach

Montessori Math Club brings together Montessori lessons with materials, collaborative games and activities, and creative projects to make for a fun and enriching math experience.

Montessori Principles & Materials

The Montessori educational philosophy is built on the fundamental belief that children have a natural desire for knowledge, understanding and respect. The right physical environment, educational materials and lessons, and developmental understandings are the keys to unlock students’ potential. Some of the tenets of a Montessori setting include a beautifully prepared environment, a mixed age setting, the freedom of choice, and meaningful work.

Montessori Math Club is led by an experienced Montessori teacher in a warm and inviting Montessori classroom where students joyfully engage in math work. Students work at their own individual pace and get new lessons when they are ready. We guide students towards independence and autonomy in the classroom.

Who are we?

Lisa Lappin Levine started MMC in the summer of 2022 out of her home in Newton Centre, MA. She is an AMS certified Montessori teacher and a Massachusetts certified teacher with a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Simmons University and a Masters of Public Policy from Harvard University.

From the moment Lisa enrolled her own children at Wellan Montessori School in 2008, she was in awe of how Montessori math materials engaged and captivated children’s interest and imagination. Her children thrived in this setting, which fostered an inquisitiveness and internal drive to learn. Lisa felt so strongly about the power of Montessori learning that she sought out training to become a Montessori teacher, first working at Kingsley Montessori School in Boston and then at Wellan Montessori School in Newton.

“My daughters have really enjoyed the Montessori Math Club.  Initially, my oldest was not necessarily attracted to math.  However,  the weekly lessons have not only increased her confidence to take on difficult math related problems and tasks, but also strengthened her skills and understanding of math. Lisa has been a great teacher to work with.  She cares about her students and their overall progression.”

Noelle, 3rd and 4th grade parent

Phoebe absolutely loves Montessori Math Club. It’s been a wonderful way for her to make strong connections between abstract math and the Montessori materials. She loves math and we know that Lisa’s support at MMC has bolstered these feelings.

Tracy, 4th grade parent

I like Montessori Math Club because you get to see what you’re doing on a mat and there’s usually a lot of different approaches for the thing you are learning about. I like coming because I get to work on other things besides the things we are working on at school where we stay in one unit for a long time. Here we get to try things a lot.

Jessie, 4th grade

Math here is way more easier than at school because you have materials and it’s more fun and Miss Lisa’s a good teacher.

Gabe, 2nd Grade

Montessori Math Club is really fun. If you go to a non-Montessori school, it’s a great approach to looking at math in a different way. It’s a lot of fun. I like how we get to use all of these materials, and it’s just a really cool way of learning.”

Jessie, 4th grade

I like Montessori Math because it used materials and so it’s easier to understand it . . .
